Hamburg is the gateway to the world, and it is where you can find Peter Mattfeld & Sohn. As experienced food traders, we have imported the products that we buy for you in their countries of origin for over 50 years. It is particularly important to us that our hand-picked suppliers use species-appropriate animal husbandry and nature-oriented feed. A highly efficient logistics network ensures just-in-time, fully temperature-controlled transportation of our products to our customers all over Europe. This is entirely in keeping with the traditions of the honourable Hamburg merchants of the past – and we are very proud of that.
PALLETS OF THE FINEST MEAT
First-class meat, fresh or frozen, comes to Hamburg from all over the world – primarily from Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, New Zealand, Australia and the United States. From here, our in-house wholesale delivery unit transports the meat to customers throughout Europe, to German butchers and to large restaurants. Our imported goods are also supplied to ship chandlers and food retailers. Please feel free to contact us directly if you are interested.

Liffey Meats is our strong partner in Ireland who is one of the country’s most modern and progressive beef producers. Premium quality beef is produced in the midst of Ireland’s green pastures. The company has established a network of more than 12,000 certified farms that breed Angus, Limousin, Hereford and Charolais cattle. Liffey Meats guarantees the full traceability of its products.
France is regarded as the home of gourmet cuisine where fresh quality poultry has traditionally played an important role. The Barbary duck is one of the most popular duck breeds. It is well known for the excellent quality of its meat and its aromatic taste. Just like it did thirty years ago, it takes around three months to raise these white-feathered ducks.
During this time, the animals feed exclusively on plant-based feedstuffs. Female and male ducks differ significantly in size and weight. Fully grown drakes often have the double the weight of female Barbary ducks. Our partner in France is IFS-certified and guarantees the highest quality standards.
Our business at the Hamburg wholesale meat market processes good quality pork and beef. In German kitchens, pork is still at the top of the popularity scale. There is no doubt that this is mainly due to the nearly endless number of ways to prepare pork. The animals are ready for slaughter by the age of six to eight months. By then, they have grown to a weight of around 90 to 120 kilos.
German heifer beef is something very special. A heifer is a young female animal that is no more than two years old and has not calved. Its meat has a strong flavour and clearly visible, fine marbling. These fine threads of fat are what make the meat especially tender and juicy.
FEED: Grass
Beef from Uruguay is lean and free from any additives. Angus and Hereford cattle grow up slowly, have a great deal of opportunity for free movement in the open fields and only graze on grasses and plants rich in minerals. This diet results in a pleasant, delicately aromatic meat flavour. We purchase both frozen and fresh beef of the best and consistent quality from our partners in Uruguay.

As early as 1930, Mennonites settled in Paraguy, most of them of German descent. They began farming and breeding cattle in the Fernheim community in Chaco Province. With a current population of around 13,000, over the years this settlement has come to specialise in the production of milk and dairy products, peanuts, sesame and seeds. Their focus, however, has always been on cattle breeding and the production of beef. The breeds are Braford and Brangus. The beef cuts produced under the “Fricochaco” brand clearly stand out from the competition. The excellent price-performance ratio from the small community of Fernheim has established itself on the world market and is highly sought after among meat experts.

In the American Mid-West, the so-called Corn Belt, agriculture is an integral part of the local society. In addition to growing corn, people breed a large number of Black Angus cattle. Until they are ready for slaughter at about 24 months, the animals spend nearly all their lives grazing under the open skies on the vast Nebraska plains. The outstanding marbling of their meat is achieved by feeding the beef special corn silage during the last 150-200 days of their lives. This results in highly aromatic meat that is buttery tender and nutty – simply delicious! The unique beef quality of Greater Omaha Packers enjoys a legendary reputation both in the USA and around the world, and rightly so.

Both the lambs and the cattle at “Silver Fern Farms” and “Wilson Hellaby” grow up in green fields under the open skies. For their meat production, the farms purposely use breeds that are known for the quality of their meat. In combination with species-appropriate animal husbandry, this provides the tender and distinctive flavour that has made New Zealand meat a favourite around the world. Our partners’ production facilities are among the most modern in the country and ensure first-class cuts and consistently high quality.

The family-owned “JOHN DEE” meat processing plant is located in eastern Australia, near the city of Brisbane. It is the continent’s oldest meat producing business still run by family. Since it was founded in 1939, the company has been dedicated to producing top-quality beef. Their considerable expertise in the selection, breeding and slaughter of cattle has added up over the course of four generations. This know-how, combined with rigorous quality management, guarantees especially flavourful grain-fed beef, for you and for us. The marvellous Black Angus cattle grow up in the lush pastures of Australia with its temperate climate. They are fed a special grain mixture at least 120 before slaughter, which results in the excellent marbling of the meat.

Argentina is well known for its outstanding expertise in meat. It is a country eleven times the size of Germany, with a population of around 43 million and 52 million heads of cattle. The pampas is the home of the gauchos with their huge herds of Hereford and Angus cattle. Beef has traditionally been one of Argentina’s main exports.
In addition to established commercial brands, we also import our own brand from here. The close and friendly cooperation with our Argentinian business partner, who produces matti’s PREMIUM in accordance with our specifications, ensures reliable top quality and consistent product availability.
MEAT FROM FARAWAY COUNTRIES
Argentinian beef has an excellent reputation – and rightly so. We meet the high demand by importing around 1,500 tonnes of Argentinian beef per year. This makes our company one of Germany‘s leading meat importers. In addition, we have imported lamb from New Zealand, US beef from Nebraska, beef from Paraguay, fine poultry from France and goose meat from Poland for many decades. Based on our many years of expertise in the meat business, we only work with first-class partners in the countries of origin.

Our close and friendly cooperation with our Argentinian partners ensures reliable premium quality and consistent product availability.
Lamb has been a food staple in many cultures for centuries. Today, it is increasingly sought after by consumers around the world who appreciate the juicy and tender meat of grass-fed lambs.
